Salary and Work Location:

This role is typically filled with a starting salary of $36,244.
This position is for the Northern IN region.

About the Job:

As an Unemployment Insurance Field Auditor, you will make a positive contribution to the Tax Department and the Agency as a whole by being a productive employee that exemplifies the ideals of accuracy, timeliness, exemplary customer service and teamwork.
Field Auditors are oftentimes the face of DWD with employers and their representatives, so it is crucial that they represent the Agency effectively and in a positive manner.
In this position it will be your responsibility as a tax auditor to verify that employers are correctly reporting wages.
It will also be your responsibility to conduct a thorough search of the employer s records for any evidence of misclassified workers.
Failure to properly report wages affects the amount of collectible tax; thereby, affecting the amount of money in the Trust Fund.

A Day in the Life:

The essential functions of this role are as follows:

  • Perform extensive research, data analysis, and investigation with regard to an employing unit or employer s compliance with UI Tax Law.
  • Communicate complex legal concepts to the employer or employer representatives with regard to current SUTA account holder issues of localization, independent contractor classification, excluded remuneration, and liability.
  • Determine the applicability of Indiana SUTA laws, regulations, and court precedent to the current audit or special assignment.
  • Process employer reports related to the audit findings or special assignment in a timely and accurate manner.
  • Document the audit process, records examined, account adjustments, and conclusions as a formal complete field audit packet.
  • Act as the witness for tax in any legal challenge to the determination made and imposed on the employer as a result of the investigation.
  • Issue a written determination of audit findings as a protestable document under IC 22-4-29 and IC 22-4-32.
  • Decide the key elements of the audit or special assignment such as escalation, time frame, and application of fraud policy.

What We're Looking for:

The ideal candidate in the position should minimally have five (5) years' work experience in Accounting; Auditing; Business Administration or accredited college training in a related field.

What You'll Need for Success:

  • Familiarity with, and the ability to use, Indiana Code, the Code of Federal Regulations, IRS publications,
  • Unemployment Insurance Policy Letters, and the Indiana Administrative Code related to audit findings and specifically with regard to a determination of worker misclassification.
  • Basic data entry and reporting software application proficiencies.
  • Highly attuned sense of urgency and commitment to excellent customer service.
  • Acute attention to detail coupled with problem solving capabilities.
  • Adaptability.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Exemplary record keeping.
  • Ability to understand, interpret, and apply DWD procedures, field audit work instructions and internal tax policies to the performance of assigned duties.

Supervisory Responsibilities/Direct Reports:

This role does not provide direct supervision to direct reports.

The check can be for multiple reasons such as signing bonus, supplies, etc. The victim will be instructed to deposit the check and use the money for any of these reasons and then instructed to send the remaining funds to the fraudster. The check will bounce and the victim is left responsible.
